The thing I knew was there were very few Africian American radio station owners in Louisiana and this was a big step for me.
KCLF-1500 is an AM station that was for sale and the only person interested was me with a very little money and no experience.
The owner told me if i didn't buy the station it would go dark, meaning it woul go off the air.
New Roads, La. is about (35) miles North of Baton Rouge with a majority Africian American population and was about to lose their only radio station, so I did what my gut feelings told me and bought the station in 1989.
The first thing to do was change the format to a more attractive one based on what the population wanted to listen to and the merchants buying air time.
The first few months was very discouraging with only a few commercial air sales, so I decided to try my hands as a DJ playing the blues on weekends and Gospel on Sunday mornings.
That worked and I got very good at it doing disco's side by side with America's best E.RODNEY JONES. The station got it's share of the listening market and KCLF became the voice of Pointe Coupee Parish.
KCLF 1500 AM can be heard on the internet at www.kclf1500am.com.
